Overview
My major project at University focused on combing augmented reality and cycling to greatly improve the experience and safety of cycling. Vizer provides the user with information such as telemetry, navigation, proximity warnings, a rear-view mirror and much more. I won 2 awards for this project and graduated top of my year.
Problem
Cycling could be made safer. Unlike cars, bicycles don’t come with rearview mirrors, an augmented-reality helmet that gives cyclists a broader view of the road could help prevent accidents.
Technology
Vizer utilises the 40 degree FOV waveguide module from WaveOptics to provide the augmented reality display. Triple fisheye cameras and IR sensor SLAM modules read the environment and a 4000 mAh battery powers the helmet for up to 5 hours at a time. All of this is stored in the modular display and battery pack which can be easily clipped on and detached by the user.
Interface
The interface is projected in front of the user at a focal length of infinity. This is important as the user can safely focus on the environment without being distracted by the AR image. The Interface is controlled through an app that the user downloads on their phone. They can customise the interface completely to their preference and riding style.
Future Proof
The helmet uses the users phone as the computer. This means that the helmet, unlike other AR devices, isn’t chip locked. The device has a longer life span as the user upgrades their phone. This also makes the helmet cheaper. Using a rail and clip system the display and battery pack can be easily removed by the user. This means that the helmet can be used by itself or easily returned and recycled if damaged.
